The Silverback MDR-X Micron HPA is the licensed airsoft version of its real-steel counterpart chambered in 5.56 mm, manufactured by Desert Tech LLC.
With its highly realistic design, it closely replicates the structure and features of the original model while incorporating a simple and extremely robust open-bolt HPA architecture, capable of delivering high performance for both DMR setups and close-quarters battle (CQB).

Simple and extremely robust open-bolt HPA architecture.
The MDR-X HPA was designed to deliver outstanding reliability, exceptionally consistent feeding, a wide power adjustment range and a very high rate of fire, while keeping maintenance requirements to a minimum.
It is built around a 3V110-06 NCF industrial solenoid valve (3/2-way), powered by 12 V DC. This industrial architecture ensures exceptional reliability, low maintenance and affordability.
In this HPA engine, the airflow that propels the BB does not pass through the solenoid valve itself; the valve only controls nozzle movement:
- When activated, air pressure pushes the nozzle forward to chamber a BB.
- Once the nozzle is extended, air flows directly through machined ports to propel the BB.
Nozzle movement is entirely pressure-driven; the system has no return spring and only one moving part.
The pneumatic assembly consists of just 4 parts and 5 seals, including only 3 dynamic FKM/Viton seals. The nozzle is made from POM to reduce friction and mass while preventing damage to BBs.
When the solenoid valve is deactivated, the air used to actuate the nozzle is vented directly into the lower receiver through the valve’s exhaust port. Since the propulsion airflow completely bypasses the valve, the valve’s flow rate does not limit the maximum achievable power.
Pressure range and performance
The system operates between 4 and 8 bar (58 to 116 PSI). However, optimal accuracy and consistency are generally achieved at lower pressures, typically between 4.5 and 6.5 bar (65 to 94 PSI).
Silverback therefore recommends:
- Using the least restrictive nozzle possible
- Using heavy BBs whenever possible
The system benefits significantly from the “joule creep” phenomenon (increased kinetic energy) when using heavy BBs.
The MDR-X HPA can achieve:
- Up to 40 rounds per second with ease
- Up to 50 rounds per second with advanced tuning and higher operating pressures
Nozzle configurations
Three nozzle configurations are available:
- 1-hole nozzle: optimised for setups below 1 joule.
- 2-hole nozzle: recommended for setups between 1 and 1.4 joules.
- 6-hole / Full Flow nozzle: recommended for setups above 1.4 joules.
HPA-specific hop-up system
The MDR-X HPA uses a dedicated hop-up chamber, specifically developed for this pneumatic system. An integrated feed guide directs BBs straight to the front face of the nozzle, ensuring extremely reliable feeding, perfect BB alignment and the complete elimination of double feeds and misfeeds.
The HPA engine and hop-up chamber are designed to self-align with each other to ensure maximum consistency.
The chamber accepts standard AEG-type hop-up buckings. However, Silverback strongly recommends using SRS/TAC-41-type buckings for an optimal air seal.
All MDR-X HPA kits come factory-fitted with a Silverback SRS 80° hop-up bucking. A harder bucking improves stability and consistency with this HPA architecture.
Air and battery consumption
Under optimal conditions, the system delivers approximately 2,000 to 2,500 shots from a 0.8 L / 48 ci air tank filled to 207 bar / 3,000 PSI.
The system requires an 11.1 V stick LiPo battery. A 1,200 mAh battery generally provides enough runtime to empty several air tanks.
Electronic Fire Control Unit (FCU)
Developed in collaboration with T238, the FCU allows adjustment of:
- Firing modes (safe / semi-auto / 3- to 5-round burst / full-auto / binary)
- Solenoid valve opening time, or “dwell” (in 0.5 ms increments)
- Rate of fire (from 12 to 50 rounds per second)
- Delay between shots in DMR mode (from 0.5 to 5 seconds, or disabled)
- Battery protection threshold (from 3.3 to 3.0 V per cell, or disabled)
- Sleep timer (from 1 to 10 hours, or disabled)
Additional FCU functions include reading the current programme settings, a total shot counter, a daily shot counter, restoring factory settings and resetting the daily shot counter.
The MDR-X comes with:
- A 120-rounds AR15/5.56 magazine
- 4 pairs of spacers to adjust the magazine wobble depending on its thickness (PA6 nylon material)
- A pin puncher for easy battery change and disassembly.
- Allen key 2mm and 5mm.
- One high nub for the hop up unit, to lift bbs from 0.32 grams and above (low nub installed out of the box).
- One extra ball plunger for the hop-up unit.
