XM177 Assault Rifle and Its Successors

XM177 is a weapon developed in the United States during the Vietnam War as a compact version of the M16 assault rifle. Officially known as Colt Model 610 and Model 629, XM177 was designed by Colt in the 1960s. The main goal was to create a lighter and shorter variant for special operations and units that needed greater mobility in jungle and urban areas.
XM177 used the 5.56x45mm NATO cartridge and had several key features that distinguished it from the standard M16. The barrel length was shortened to 10 inches in the Model 610 and 11.5 inches in the Model 629, making it a much more compact weapon. Due to the shorter barrel and reduced weight, which was approximately 2.6 kg, XM177 became popular among soldiers who needed a lighter and more maneuverable weapon.
