It was designed as a <strong>replacement for the older Tokarev TT-33 and Nagant M1895 pistols</strong>, which were previously used by the Soviet armed forces.<br />Development of the <strong>Makarov pistol</strong> began in <strong>1947</strong> and it was adopted into the Soviet army in 1951.
